How to Evaluate a VPN Before You Buy
Compare purpose, total cost, limits, privacy claims and evidence - not just the discount or headline speed.
Start with a job, not a promotion
Write down what you need: a supported travel device, access to your own network, or an organization-managed work connection. Check device and operating-system support first. A consumer subscription generally does not provide access to your employer's internal systems. This guide does not rank providers or claim hands-on testing; it gives you questions to ask of any offer.
Translate the price into a real commitment
Compare the amount due today, the initial term, renewal price, currency, taxes and cancellation method. An advertised monthly equivalent can require paying several years in advance. A hypothetical plan costing $72 upfront for two years is $3 per month during that term; if it renews at $96 per year, the renewal equivalent is $8 per month. Those are examples, not live offers. Save the actual terms before buying.
Unlimited still needs a definition
An unlimited-data statement does not necessarily mean unlimited devices, simultaneous connections, speed, server capacity or permitted uses. A service might have no fixed data allowance while restricting concurrent sessions. A metered offer may instead charge for data transfer or for each active user. Ask which unit is counted, when it resets, whether overages cost extra, and what happens at a limit. Check fair-use and acceptable-use policies.
Make privacy claims specific
Look separately for account and payment records, source addresses, connection timestamps, usage totals, diagnostic data and browsing-activity records. Ask which categories are retained, for how long, for what purpose and by whom. No-logs language should be read alongside the actual policy. An independent audit can be useful evidence, but its date, scope, limitations and remediation matter; it is not a permanent guarantee.
Keep a neutral comparison sheet
For each candidate record supported devices, connection limits, total initial and renewal cost, refund conditions, support channels, operator identity and the evidence behind important claims. Leave unknown values marked unknown. Avoid converting an affiliate commission or a large server count into a quality score. Test a small representative workflow during any applicable trial and keep within its terms.
